Origins and Development

Founded in 1926 in Grenchen, Switzerland, by Otto Wüllimann, Hermann Schindler, and Jakob Schneider, Nivada Grenchen specialized in producing Swiss watches. Initially known as Wüllimann, Schneider, Nivada SA, the company focused on developing precise and functional timepieces.

During its early years, Nivada Grenchen was among the pioneers of automatic watch manufacturing. The brand specialized in instrument watches, featuring water resistance, chronographs, and high precision. By 1939, the company had gained recognition in the Swiss watch industry and participated in national exhibitions.

1958
ANTARCTIC

Introduced in 1958, the Antarctic became one of Nivada Grenchen's most successful and enduring collections. Created during the golden age of exploration, it was designed as a robust and reliable everyday watch, capable of accompanying adventurers in the most demanding environments.

The Antarctic gained international recognition after participating in several scientific expeditions, where its durability and precision were put to the test in extreme conditions. Its clean dial, elegant proportions, and versatile design quickly made it a favorite among professionals and watch enthusiasts alike.

SUPER ANTARCTIC

Introduced in 1957, the Super Antarctic was developed to withstand some of the harshest environments on Earth. Built as a rugged evolution of the Antarctic collection, it featured enhanced shock resistance, improved durability, and exceptional reliability in extreme conditions.

The model gained international recognition after accompanying members of the American Navy's Deep Freeze Antarctic expeditions, where its performance helped establish Nivada Grenchen's reputation for producing dependable tool watches.

With its distinctive arrow hands, highly legible dial, and robust construction, the Super Antarctic became one of the brand's most celebrated exploration watches. 1961
CHRONOMASTER AVIATOR SEA DIVER

Introduced in 1961, the Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver is widely regarded as the most iconic watch in Nivada Grenchen's history. Nicknamed "The World's Busiest Watch", it was designed as the ultimate multi-purpose tool watch, combining features for pilots, divers, sailors, and racing drivers in a single timepiece.

A true "Super Chronograph," it integrated a chronograph function, a bidirectional rotating bezel, a tachymeter scale, a second time-zone indication, and a regatta countdown function while maintaining impressive water resistance for its era. Few watches of the 1960s could match its level of versatility and technical sophistication.

1965
ANTARCTIC DIVER

the Antarctic Diver brought the rugged spirit of the Antarctic collection into the world of underwater exploration. Designed as a versatile dive watch, it combined robust water resistance, a rotating timing bezel, and excellent legibility in a compact and elegant case.

Launched alongside other legendary Nivada diving watches such as the Depthomatic and Depthmaster, the Antarctic Diver offered a more refined interpretation of the professional dive watch while retaining the reliability and durability required by adventurers and sportsmen.

Produced throughout the second half of the 1960s, the Antarctic Diver remains one of the most distinctive vintage references in the Antarctic family and a testament to Nivada Grenchen's rich diving heritage.

ELECTRIC

Introduced in the mid-1960s, the Electric reflected Nivada Grenchen's fascination with innovation during a period of rapid technological progress. Its distinctive dial featured stylized hour markers inspired by lightning bolts, a subtle nod to the era's growing fascination with electricity and modern engineering.

With its clean lines, elegant dauphine hands, and minimalist design, the Electric combined contemporary aesthetics with timeless Swiss craftsmanship. Produced between approximately 1965 and 1969, it offered a refined interpretation of the dress watch while embracing the optimistic spirit of the Space Age.

WANDERER GMT

the Wanderer GMT was created for a new generation of international travelers. Combining a GMT function with the renowned Vulcain Cricket alarm movement, it allowed wearers to track a second time zone while benefiting from a mechanical alarm an uncommon combination at the time.

Blending sporty functionality with elegant design, the Wanderer featured a distinctive rotating GMT bezel, refined dauphine hands, and clean proportions that made it equally suited for travel, business, and everyday wear.

TRAVELMASTER

The Travelmaster was designed for the emerging generation of international travelers. Combining a GMT function, a world-time bezel, and the renowned Vulcain Cricket alarm movement, it allowed wearers to track multiple time zones while benefiting from a mechanical alarm system.

Its distinctive dual-crown architecture and highly functional dial made it an ideal companion for pilots, businessmen, and globetrotters during the golden age of air travel. ALERTAMATIC

Introduced in 1968, the Alertamatic showcased Nivada Grenchen's expertise beyond chronographs and dive watches. Equipped with a mechanical alarm function, it was designed for professionals and travelers who needed a reliable reminder directly on the wrist.

Powered by a dedicated alarm movement and featuring a distinctive dual-crown layout, the Alertamatic combined practicality with the elegant design codes of the 1960s. At a time when mechanical alarm watches represented some of the most sophisticated wristwatches available, the Alertamatic stood as a symbol of innovation and everyday functionality.

TRAVELMASTER WT

iI 1970, the Travelmaster WT was Nivada Grenchen's answer to the growing needs of international travelers and professionals. Combining a World Time display, GMT functionality, and a mechanical alarm, it was one of the most sophisticated travel watches of its era.

Powered by the renowned Vulcain Cricket Caliber 120, the Travelmaster WT allowed its wearer to track multiple time zones while benefiting from the famous Cricket alarm function. Its distinctive city bezel and dual-pusher configuration made it an indispensable companion for globetrotters during the golden age of international travel.

FIBER STAR

Introduced in the early 1970s, the Fiber Star embodied Nivada Grenchen's bold and innovative spirit. Crafted from Noryl, a revolutionary lightweight resin material popular during the Space Age, it offered a fresh alternative to traditional steel sports watches.

Designed for a younger generation, the Fiber Star stood out with its vibrant colors, interchangeable bezels and straps, and highly accessible price point. Its playful design and futuristic aesthetic perfectly captured the optimism and creativity of the 1970s.

1976
F77 BLACK

Introduced in 1976 as the Mustang 76, the watch would later be renamed the F77, becoming one of Nivada Grenchen's most distinctive creations of the late 1970s. Featuring an integrated stainless-steel bracelet, angular case design, and a sporty day-date display, it perfectly reflected the era's growing demand for luxury sports watches.

The black textured dial brought a modern and technical character to the collection, while the bold architecture and integrated design gave the F77 a strong identity of its own. Produced until 1980, the F77 Black remains one of the most desirable vintage references from Nivada Grenchen's 1970s catalog and a key inspiration behind the modern F77 revival.
