A 38mm hand-wound Swiss watch built on a design first worn during U.S. Navy polar expeditions. The salmon sunray dial turns heads immediately. Flip it over, start winding and a miniature mechanical penguin automaton comes to life. An intimate complication designed for the wearer alone. 316L stainless steel case, double-domed sapphire crystal, 10 ATM water resistance. Swiss made.

Built on a polar legacy
First engineered in the 1950s for daily precision timekeeping, this 38mm stainless steel watch descends from a collection issued during Operation Deep Freeze, the 1955–56 U.S. Navy expedition to Antarctica. Its proportions, its applied indices, its brushed-and-polished alternating case finish, all preserved from that era. A genuine vintage-inspired dress watch that wears equally well on a flat-link bracelet or a leather strap.

The secret complication
Flip the watch over. Begin winding. The sapphire caseback reveals a mechanical animation invisible from the front: a hand-painted penguin automaton, driven by a cam system integrated directly into the movement. The winding motion, the same action that powers the Soprod P054 hand-wound movement, simultaneously drives the animation. No battery. No electronics. Pure mechanical ingenuity, hidden on the reverse side of the watch where only the wearer ever sees it. This tradition of private, discreet complications, automata and erotic scenes concealed in watch casebacks, dates to 18th-century Swiss horology. The design reinterprets that heritage with irreverence and craft.

Specifications that matter
The 38mm 316L stainless steel case is 12.45mm thick with a 45mm lug-to-lug span, proportions that suit both smaller and larger wrists. The screw-down crown ensures water resistance to 10 ATM / 100 metres. A double-domed sapphire crystal protects the salmon sunray brushed dial. The modified Soprod P054 manual winding movement powers both timekeeping and the animation via the same winding motion.

Nine strap options
Available on a beads-of-rice stainless steel bracelet, a flat-link bracelet, black or brown racing perforated leather, smooth black or brown leather, black or brown leather with white contrast stitching, and a black rubber tropic strap. Each configuration changes the character of the watch entirely, from vintage dress to sport-ready tool watch.

Vintage Swiss watch caseback collection with penguin engraving, mid-20th-century polar expedition design
Inspired by the Caseback from the mid 60s & 70s

First introduced on our vintage models inspired by mid-century polar expeditions, the penguin engraving watch, seen here on the salmon dial edition, became a quiet signature of the collection.

1965 Swiss patent document for the penguin caseback design, registered in Grenchen Switzerland
The Penguin, Patented Since 1965

More than a symbol, the penguin is part of Nivada Grenchen’s heritage. Officially registered as a patent in 1965, this emblem traces back to the Antarctic collection’s roots in the age of polar exploration. Reinterpreted here from the original archival patent, it connects the Antarctic Erotic to a genuine piece of the brand’s history where vintage inspiration, playful character, and watchmaking legacy meet, brought to life here on a salmon dial that echoes the patina of original 1960s Antarctic watches.

Inside the Secret Complication

Conceived by 'Dr. Coldwater,' the animated caseback complication on this salmon dial swiss watch transforms the simple act of winding into a hidden mechanical spectacle. Entirely revealed on the reverse side of the watch, this private animation is driven by motion, engineering, and a touch of irreverence. In this video, discover the assembly of the complication and the mechanical ingenuity behind a mechanism designed as a discreet surprise where playful storytelling meets serious watchmaking.
