The Antarctic Erotic Tuxedo is a 38mm Swiss automatic watch from Nivada Grenchen, featuring a two-tone tuxedo sector dial and a hidden animated caseback complication driven by the winding action. Built on the iconic Antarctic platform since the 1950s.

Built on the iconic Antarctic platform introduced in the 1950s, the Antarctic Erotic reinterprets one of Nivada Grenchen’s most emblematic designs through a bold yet subtle evolution.

At its core, it remains a true daily watch: a perfectly balanced 38mm stainless steel alternating polished and brushed finish, paired with timeless dial executions inspired by vintage Antarctic models. But beyond the dial lies its secret. Flip the watch and interact with it the animated caseback comes to life through the winding motion. A miniature mechanical automaton, engineered as an extension of the movement itself, transforms a simple gesture into a private, playful experience.

This hidden animation remains invisible to the outside world, reserved only for the wearer. This concept follows a long-standing watchmaking tradition of discreet complications from automata to hidden scenes designed not to be shown, but discovered. Inside, a modified hand-wound Soprod P054 movement powers both timekeeping and the animation.

The mechanism has been re-engineered so the winding action drives a cam system, translating motion into a vertical animation on the caseback, without compromising reliability or wearability. Beyond its mechanical ingenuity, the Antarctic Erotic carries meaning. Rooted in the Antarctic legacy, first tested during U.S. Navy Operation Deep Freeze (1955–1956) the penguin became a historic symbol of the collection. This watch reinterprets that emblem with a modern twist, while contributing to real-world impact.

Vintage Swiss watch caseback collection with penguin engraving, mid-20th-century polar expedition design
Inspired by the Caseback from the mid 60s & 70s

First introduced on our vintage models inspired by mid-century polar expeditions, the penguin engraving watch, seen here on the tuxedo dial edition, became a quiet signature of the collection.

The Penguin, Patented Since 1965

More than a symbol, the penguin is part of Nivada Grenchen’s heritage. Officially registered as a patent in 1965, this emblem traces back to the Antarctic collection’s roots in the age of polar exploration. Reinterpreted here from the original archival patent, it connects the Antarctic Erotic to a genuine piece of the brand’s history where vintage inspiration, playful character, and watchmaking legacy meet, brought to life here on a tuxedo dial that echoes the patina of original 1960s Antarctic watches.

Inside the Secret Complication

Conceived by 'Dr. Coldwater,' the animated caseback complication on this tuxedo dial Swiss watch transforms the simple act of winding into a hidden mechanical spectacle. Entirely revealed on the reverse side of the watch, this private animation is driven by motion, engineering, and a touch of irreverence. In this video, discover the assembly of the complication and the mechanical ingenuity behind a mechanism designed as a discreet surprise where playful storytelling meets serious watchmaking.
