What is a meca-quartz chronograph?

A meca-quartz chronograph is a hybrid watch movement that combines the precision of quartz with the mechanical feel of a traditional chronograph.

While the watch keeps time using quartz, the chronograph mechanism uses a mechanical module, allowing the seconds hand to sweep smoothly and reset instantly like a mechanical watch.

The Autochron: A vintage
Meca-Quartz Chronograph

The Nivada Grenchen Autochron Meca-Quartz is inspired by a rare Autochron prototype from the 1970s discovered in the brand’s archives.

Preserved for decades, its distinctive dial design and tachymeter layout became the inspiration for the modern revival, now powered by the VK67 meca-quartz movement.

What Is the Tachymeter on a Chronograph?

The tachymeter bezel on chronograph watches allows users to calculate speed over a fixed distance. To use it:

1. Start the chronograph when movement begins
2. Stop it after one kilometer or mile
3. The seconds hand indicates the average speed per hour

The Original Autochron Prototype of the 1970s

There is a lot of talk now about ‘prototype’ watches. We are, however, very happy to sell this as a genuine test piece by Nivada in as-new condition (only a few tiny hairline scratches from storage!) it has never been worn.

We believe that these watches were made in only around 20 examples and were never commercially available. To us, the most interesting element of this watch is the singer dial that shares some of the details of the Rolex Daytona. The lume on the dial and hands has taken on a stunning, rich patina. Additionally the watch features a bi-directional rotating bezel, date feature and red depth rating. The steel bracelet is in outstanding condition.

This watch is in completely untouched condition and we have decided to not even open this time capsule. The watch is running fine, but for everyday wear a service might be recommended.
